Rennie Foster returns with another stellar album of deep techno and house music that is both challenging and engaging. Rennie’s debut full length CD album “The War of Art” was focused on the state of the dance music industry and the new challenges of a digital market. This next album “Soul Music for the Damned” leaves those worldly problems behind in the city and heads for a more esoteric and “other-worldly” destination. Based around the recent hit single “Devil’s Water”, the album plays with a dark and rustic undertone yet somehow remains soulful and even playful. Devil’s Water has been featured on Pete Tong’s essential mix show a whopping 4 times in a row (and counting), been licensed by huge names such as Trentmoller for various compilations, been remixed by such artists as James Zabiela, The Youngsters, Kiki, Dave Dresden and has become a signature track for taste-making DJs such as Sasha and James Holden. Recently DJ Magazine, UK described the track as a “bone chilling voyage of dark beauty”. Other tracks on the album such as “A Commitment to Transit”, “Good Time Charlie” and “Roughshod” have been heavily championed by such DJs as Laurent Garnier, Derrick May, DJ Bone and Dave Clark among others. The album’s opening track, “Midnight Sun” is an epic fusion of Okinawan chants, Asian sounds and lush tribal techno with a unique arrangement based on classical music. This song features vocals by Ely, the singer from Japanese techno-pop unit “Bremen”. A truly unique masterpiece that has since been remixed by the likes Raudive, Mark Broom, Gary Martin and DJ 3000.
“Soul Music for the Damned” is a truly unique, 12 song album that deals with mysterious subject matter wholly uncommon to dance music. It’s apparent from the album’s occult inspired jacket artwork that it is no typical techno disc. Once again Rennie has managed to capture the imagination with an album that is both accessible and somehow subversive as well. Celestial vocals, skeletal minimalism, warm funk ...it’s all here, and more.
